Hello Lovely Humans,

There is a strange little space between the life we have and the life we hope to build.

A space filled with plans, possibilities and the quiet belief that things could look different someday.

Perhaps you're saving for a home.

Working toward a career change.

Building something of your own.

Preparing for a new chapter.

Or simply imagining a version of everyday life that feels a little more like you.

Whatever it is, there is a future you can almost picture.

And naturally, you want to get there.

But I've been thinking about something lately.

What happens to the life we're living while we're busy preparing for the one we want?

♡

The Trouble with Someday

When things settle down.

When I have a little more money.

When I finally make the change.

When life looks the way I've imagined.

We have a remarkable ability to place happiness somewhere in the future.

Not intentionally, of course.

We simply begin treating the present as a temporary arrangement.

Something to get through.

Something to tolerate until the better chapter begins.

And sometimes the present genuinely is difficult. There are circumstances we want to change for good reasons.

But even then, life doesn't stop happening while we work toward something different.

There are still birthdays.

Sunday mornings.

Conversations that make us laugh.

Little victories.

Favorite meals.

Unexpected Moments of Delight.

An entire life unfolding in the middle of our plans.

♡

You Can Want More Without Rejecting What You Have

I think we sometimes treat gratitude and ambition as though they belong on opposite sides of the room.

If you're grateful, shouldn't you be content?

And if you're content, why would you want anything to change?

But perhaps both can exist together.

You can appreciate the stability of your current circumstances while working toward greater freedom.

You can love your home while dreaming of another.

You can be proud of what you've accomplished and still feel curious about what comes next.

You can recognize the good in a season without wanting to remain there forever.

Gratitude doesn't require permanence.

And ambition doesn't have to mean dissatisfaction.

Sometimes wanting something different is simply recognizing that you've grown, your priorities have changed or your idea of a beautiful life has evolved.

That doesn't make the chapter you're in any less meaningful.

♡

Don't Make the Present Pay for the Future

There is something admirable about being willing to make sacrifices for a future that matters to you.

Saving instead of spending.

Learning instead of scrolling.

Choosing patience over instant gratification.

Doing the unglamorous work that nobody sees.

But I wonder whether, in our determination to build a better tomorrow, we occasionally ask too much of today.

We postpone every pleasure.

Fill every spare hour.

Turn every hobby into an opportunity.

Convince ourselves that rest can wait until we've arrived.

As though the future version of us deserves a beautiful life more than the person we are right now.

But she doesn't.

She deserves it too.

And perhaps building a better future shouldn't require us to abandon every good thing about the present.

There can still be room for the little treat.

The afternoon off.

The spontaneous laughter.

The evening that accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Not because we've forgotten our goals.

But because we're still allowed to enjoy being alive while pursuing them.

♡

The Middle is a Life Too

We celebrate beginnings.

And we love endings.

The announcement.

The accomplishment.

The moment when all the effort finally makes sense.

But so much of life happens in the middle.

The months of saving.

The ordinary workdays.

The plans that change.

The small decisions that nobody notices.

The evenings when progress feel painfully slow.

The days when you're not entirely sure how long the journey will take.

There is no grand reveal waiting at the end of most of those days.

And yet, they matter.

Not only because they're taking you somewhere.

But because they're days you will never get back.

The middle isn't merely the distance between who you are and who you're becoming. It's part of your life too.

♡

Build the Future. Live the Present.

I don't think the answer is to dream smaller.

Or to abandon the plans that make your heart feel hopeful.

Keep building.

Keep saving.

Keep learning.

Keep making the thoughtful decisions that might give your future self more freedom, peace or possibility.

But perhaps leave a little room to enjoy the person you are along the way.

Make the coffee you love.

Celebrate the small progress.

Take the photograph.

Enjoy the ordinary Friday evening.

Allow yourself to be happy about something that has absolutely nothing to do with your goals.

And when you catch yourself thinking that life will finally begin once everything falls into place, gently remember:

This is your life too.

Not the finished version.

Not the one you've been imagining.

The one happening right now.

And perhaps one day, when you finally arrive at the future you've worked so carefully to create, you'll look back at this season with a little more tenderness than you expected.

Not because everything was easy.

Not because you wanted to stay.

But because, somewhere between here and there, you remembered to live.

Thank you for making space for this week's letter.

If something resonated, I'd love to hear from you. Simply hit reply. And if you think someone else might need this gentle reminder, feel free to forward it to them.

With intention,

xx Emily 🫰
