Hello Beautiful,
We all love a cozy night in, a luxurious face mask, or scrolling in bed for hours. But are these moments really what we need?
Let’s be honest - sometimes, Self-Care feels like lighting a candle and taking a hot shower. Other times? It looks like finally calling your insurance company, saying no to a friend, or going to bed instead of watching just one more episode.
So... which one’s really Self-Care?
Today, let’s unpack the difference between Self-Care and Self-Pampering - and why both have their place, but they’re not the same thing.
Self-Care - Intentional actions that support long-term physical, mental, and emotional health.
Examples: therapy, meal prepping, sleep hygiene, saying no/setting boundaries.
Self-Pampering - Pleasurable activities that provide comfort or indulgence but don’t necessarily address deeper needs.
Examples: spa days, shopping sprees, fancy lattes, binge-watching TV.
Here’s Where It Gets Tricky...
Pampering feels like care. And sometimes, it is.
But when we use pampering to avoid what we really need - like rest, boundaries, or uncomfortable growth - it becomes a distraction.
Reflection Prompt:
What’s something I’ve been calling “Self-Care” that might actually be avoidance?
They’re Not Enemies. They’re Teammates.
You don’t have to give up the things that feel good. The magic happens when you combine comfort with intention:
A long bath + journaling your stress.
A movie night + turning your phone on Do Not Disturb.
A latte + checking in with your emotions, not numbing them.
A pedicure + listening to a self-growth podcast.
A massage + following up with a hard conversation you've been avoiding.
Ask yourself:
“Is this helping me cope, grow, or avoid?”
If the answer is “cope,” “grow,” or even “pause mindfully,” you’re probably on the right track.
Common Myths
💬 “If it feels good, it must be Self-Care.”
Not always - real Self-Care sometimes feels like work (boundaries, budgeting, confronting emotions).
💬 “Pampering is selfish or superficial.”
Not necessarily - pampering can be part of Self-Care when done with intention, not avoidance.
Real Self-Care is sometimes quiet, boring, or even tough. But it’s worth it. And yes, it can include a warm blanket, your favorite drink, and a moment to just be.
Just make sure it’s what you truly need - not what you’re reaching for out of habit. Take care (really)!
Thank you for reading and enjoy the rest of your week my friend!
Until my next email,
xx Emily 🫰
