Hello Beautiful People,

As we continue the theme of Self-Love this February, consider this your permission slip to slow down and rest.

If you have ever felt guilty for resting this is your reminder: Self-Care is not laziness. It is not a luxury and it is definitely not extra. It is a proven way to support your body, mind and emotional wellbeing.

Self-Care became popular online but the truth is it existed long before the trend and science has been confirming its benefits for years.

So today let’s talk about the real reason Self-Care works and why you deserve it without explanation.

The Science Behind Self-Care

Self-Care is often marketed as bubble baths, skincare routines and aesthetic mornings. While those things can be soothing, Self-Care goes deeper than that.

True Self-Care is any action that helps you regulate your mind and body, restore balance and protect your mental health.

Research shows that Self-Care can:

Improve mood and emotional regulation
Reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms
Support immune function
Improve sleep quality
Lower the risk of burnout

When you consistently take care of your physical and emotional needs you are giving your body the chance to recover instead of constantly operating in survival mode.

And yes your body keeps track.

Self-Care and Stress Reduction: The Nervous System Connection

When you are stressed your body activates the fight or flight response. This triggers cortisol (the stress hormone), raises your heart rate and keeps your brain in danger mode.

The problem is many of us stay there for too long.

Long term stress can lead to:

  • Exhaustion and brain fog

  • Weight changes

  • Inflammation

  • Digestive issues

  • Mood swings

  • Weakened immunity

Self-Care helps shift your body into the opposite state which is rest and digest.

Even small actions like deep breathing, journaling, stretching, taking a walk or eating nourishing meals can signal to your body:

You are safe. You can relax now.

That is where healing begins.

Midweek Reset: 5-Minute Self-Care Check-In

Try this today (right now if you can):

  • Drink a full glass of water

  • Take 5 slow deep breaths

  • Relax your shoulders and unclench your jaw

  • Step away from your phone/computer for 10 minutes

  • Ask yourself: What do I need today?

Self-Care is not always glamorous. Sometimes it is simply choosing to pause.

Guided Self-Care Journal Exercise

Grab your journal (or notes app) and answer these:

  1. What has been draining me lately?

Write honestly. No filtering.

  1. What has been nourishing me?

Even if it is small such as music, sleep, a friend or quiet time.

  1. What is one thing I can do this week to support myself?

Something realistic, not overwhelming.

  1. If my body could speak, what would it ask for right now?

Rest? Water? Boundaries? A break?

  1. What is one boundary I need to reinforce?

Example: No work after 8PM or stop over explaining myself.

Reminder: The goal is not perfection. The goal is awareness.

This Week’s Self-Care Challenge

🌿 Your challenge:
Do one thing daily that calms your nervous system.

It can be:

  • A 10-minute walk

  • Stretching

  • Prayer or meditation

  • Reading instead of scrolling

  • Sitting in silence

  • Drinking tea slowly

  • Cleaning one small space

Small rituals create big results.

Soft Reminder Before You Go

Self-Care is not selfish. It is not weak. It is not something you earn.

It is maintenance. It is protection. It is how you stay whole. And you deserve to feel like a priority in your own life.

Thank you for reading and enjoy the rest of your week my friend!

Until my next email,

xx Emily 🫰
